Literary New Mexico

The New Mexico Author Adventures Trail takes us through a whirlwind tour of artists and writers who lived in a mystical arena. Like so many have done for over a century, we occasionally make pilgrimages there, where it is easy to see and feel the arts surround you and enjoy unusual treats, like chili pepper in your hot chocolate and Prickly Pear Crunch.

This trail begins in Albuquerque with the pueblos, which should be approached with reverence and with cameras stored away as photography of the pueblos is considered disrespectful. Still, the sights will be unlike any you will find elsewhere so well-worth soaking in.

The final stop on the trail could either be Abiquiu or Taos. Driving to Abiquiu has the feeling of an open road. The road to Taos, however, is a scenic mountain trek. The D.H. Lawrence Ranch in Taos is located via a gravelly road approximately 45 minutes from the main highway. If seeing it is a priority, we recommend staying in Taos and enjoying its vast menu of outdoor activities in addition to the D.H. Lawrence Ranch, then traveling back down. It would be challenging to integrate the D.H. Lawrence Ranch into the same day of visiting the other stops on our trail.
